The model MU-2 was made for Dry Battery operation only...

The later MU-2 used 4x 199 tubes, and the new UX120 for audio output. Other MU-2 differences from the MU-1 remained.
The MU-2 continued in production until September/October 1926.
At that time the MU-1 was available in five different console cabinets of varying cost. The most expensive, the 'Renaissance' cost $1400.00

The Synchrophase in the Movies

At this time I am aware of the Synchrophase featuring in two movies of note. The 1940 John Ford film of Eugene O’Neill’s ‘The Long Journey Home’ with John Wayne, has the Synchrophase being operated on a ship. The radio operator is clearly seen adjusting the controls to tune the set at about 4 minutes from the start. The film is in black & white, but the Grebe’s distinctive front panel is unmistakable in close-up. The second film is the wonderful ‘A River Runs Through It’ produced and directed by Robert Redford in 1992. This story of family life in rural Montana in the early 1900s is an adaptation of Norman Maclean’s classic memoir. At about 1 hour 6 minutes into the film, a Synchrophase with a contemporary round metal cased cone speaker on top is seen as a prominent and important family possession in Norman’s girlfriend’s family home. It is not used in the film; just as a prop to demonstrate the 20s style.

Please email if you know of any other appearances of the Synchrophase in the movies, or indeed any mention of the Synchrophase in any other media.
